As a forestry worker, I plant, care for, and manage trees or forests.

I am involved in the process of restoration, conservation, and managing timber harvest by following and monitoring a forest modelling plan.

I'm resonsible for data collection, developing contracts for tree planting, and communicating with other agriculture or forestry workers.

A forestry worker could be working in an office one day and in a forest the next. When working outside, I'm very hands-on using specialized equipment to survey areas and collect data. Working in the office involves a lot of computer work and working with other companies to develop restoration efforts.

Job Requirements & Duties

Read and use maps and surveying systems
Take measurements and do calculations with the data
Lead and communicate plans with fellow forestry workers
Explain data to managers and hiring companies
Create reforestation plans
Manage contracts with tree-planters

Education & Training

A Bachelor’s degree in forestry, forestry engineering, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, wildlife biology, horticulture, or conservation sciences.

Job Outlook

The opportunities for a forestry worker in the next 5-10 years remain likely- trees as a resource remain in demand while conservation efforts increase. The forestry industry in Canada employed about 210,600 people in 2018, including an estimated 11,600 Indigenous employees (as of 2016 records)
