Job Requirements & Duties

  • Read and follow building plans to construct barns, fences, and other farm structures
  • Build and install structures and fixtures on farms using wood and other materials as needed
  • Choose the right materials for each project, including wood, metal, and composites
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and machines safely to build and repair farm buildings
  • Follow safety rules and wear protective gear to prevent injuries on construction sites
  • Check and repair existing structures to keep barns, fences, and other farm buildings safe

Education & Training

  • Entry-level carpenters often start through apprenticeships with certified carpenters.
  • To become certified, most provinces require a mix of on-the-job training, technical courses, and exams. Experience building farm structures can be especially helpful.
