Some days I’m outside working with cattle and vets to keep the animals healthy and safe. Other days, I’m inside planning budgets and writing reports to keep the feedlot running smoothly. I love knowing my work helps cattle grow strong and healthy, ready to support farmers and bring food to markets.

Job Requirements & Duties

  • Make sure the feedlot is safe for workers and animals, following all health and safety guidelines
  • Check on the health of animals daily and work with veterinarians if any issues arise
  • Manage the feedlot’s finances, including budgets, expenses, and cost of feed and supplies
  • Hire, train, and supervise staff, ensuring they handle animals carefully and follow proper care practices
  • Track animal growth and performance to make sure feeding plans are effective and animals are healthy
  • Plan daily, weekly, and monthly schedules for employees to keep the feedlot running efficiently
  • Coordinate with suppliers and veterinarians to maintain feed quality and animal health
  • Implement strategies to improve animal welfare, productivity, and overall farm sustainability

Education & Training

  • A formal degree is not required, but experience working with livestock and on farms is very important. Knowledge of animal care, feed management, and farm operations helps prepare for this role. A degree in Animal Science, Agribusiness, or a related field can also be helpful.
