I design systems and equipment to make a specific aspect of farming easier and safer. 

I work with a team to build the designs and test them to make sure they do the job we need them to do.  

I work with farmers, contractors, and consultants to identify potential problems and use my knowledge of engineering to work around them.

My workplace varies everyday. Some days, I’m in the office designing systems and working at a computer. Other days, I’m in the field or at a job site working hands-on with farmers and contractors.

Job Requirements & Duties

  • Plan and supervise the construction of agriculture related structures or systems
  • Evaluate existing equipment that is used for farming to improve the design
  • Understand environmental factors that could impact animal or crop production and think of solutions for these challenges
  • Be familiar with laws and codes to make sure all designs meet industry standards
  • Prepare design reports and present them to clients and colleagues
  • Test systems and equipment to make sure they are safe and reliable 

Education & Training

  • A university degree in mechanical, industrial, or similar type of engineering is required for this job. A post-graduate degree can help prospective employees stand apart from the competition.

    As the world tries to feed more people more efficiently, agricultural engineers will be needed to improve systems and help the industry become more productive.
