I love getting out in the field and visiting different farms every day. No two days are ever the same. Helping farmers grow healthy crops keeps my job exciting. In the winter I switch gears to working from home and attending workshops to learn new ways to make farming even better.

Job Requirements & Duties

  • Scout fields and consult with customers on what I find in the field
  • Learn from researchers about the latest methods for managing pests, diseases, and crop growth
  • Advise farmers on ways to improve crop production and profits while caring for the environment
  • Test and evaluate new crop varieties to see how they could work on farms
  • Study how soil type and water drainage affect plant growth, and suggest the best ways to care for crops
  • Explore new crop technologies and train farmers and farm workers on how to use them
  • Prepare presentations and speak at training sessions or workshops for farmers and others in agriculture
  • Conduct hands-on research outdoors, testing new products and seeds to find the best options for farms
  • During the off-season, participate in training, webinars, and workshops to keep skills up-to-date

Education & Training

  • Most agronomists need a university undergraduate degree. In many provinces, agronomists must be certified and members of a professional association. There are also many opportunities for ongoing training and learning while working.
