I do a lot of work in my office in the government building where I can write reports and email experts. I also attend a lot of meetings and conferences to stay informed and take part in conversations about new policies.

Job Requirements & Duties

  • Plan and oversee the research of different policies and programs that relate to agriculture
  • Give advice and guidance to people that ask questions about policies
  • Organize committees to look into projects or programs that already exist in other provinces or countries
  • Write policies to recommend to upper management, and answer questions from the public and other experts
  • Understand the goals of different departments and use knowledge of policy rules to help them create new policies
  • Find topics in Canada that aren’t being handled properly and work towards solutions that ensure economic, environmental, and/or social sustainability

Education & Training

  • A university degree in the area you hope to specialize in is required. There are also positions where a master's degree or PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) are needed, or will increase your chances of getting a specific job.

When I’m building a new policy or program, I have to make sure that I know exactly how it will impact people and the specifics of the problem it deals with. This takes a lot of research and investigation. 

Written Communications

I write briefing notes, letters, reports, and press releases to present problems and my recommendations to upper management, stakeholders, and the public. Clear and concise written and verbal communication is important in this job!

Analytical Thinking

I need to be able to analyze and interpret information, and then prioritize the policies and programs I recommend by considering impact and urgency.

Resilience

Sometimes customers change their mind midway through a project and sometimes codes are hard to troubleshoot. It’s important to be resilient and get back up again after these challenges!
